Nara

The word Nara comes from the Aboriginal language meaning, 'companion' and this very aptly describes the role of our Nara Volunteers.

The volunteers began this service for patients of Fremantle Hospital in 1988. They have grown to a group of men and women who voluntarily contribute time and effort to patient centred activities.

Volunteers come from a broad spectrum of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. All possess the qualities that make this service one that is highly thought of and respected throughout the Hospital.

Patient Centred Duties

Assist patients / visitors requiring help with queries and directional needs.
Welcome elective admissions and accompany them to the wards with their admission notes.
Take patients and their notes to the Diagnostic Unit, Coronary Care Lounge and B91 from Admissions.
Deliver flowers to patients.
Refresh and care for patients' flowers.
Visit wards to carry out patient centred activities and offer companionship to the lonely. These activities include shopping, some banking, reading, conversing, and making telephone calls.
Do light laundry services for those who have no one to care for their hospital needs.
Assist patients in the Diagnostic Unit, Pain Clinic, Diabetic Assessment Clinic, and the Ulcer Clinic as requested.
Assist with entertainment on Ward V5 East - Bingo.
Give supportive care to friends and relatives of patients.
Provide audio-tapes for patients.
