The Pre-admission Clinic and Day of Surgery Admission Ward (DOSA) were designed to improve the management of patients requiring admission to hospital for elective surgery at both Fremantle Hospital and Kaleeya Campus.

All patients booked for elective surgery (except Cardio-thoracic) attend the pre-admission clinic two to four weeks prior to surgery.  A comprehensive multidisciplinary health assessment is performed which includes staff from anaesthetics, physiotherapy, medical teams, nursing, and other allied health disciplines. All pre-operative investigations are completed prior to surgery.

Patients are required to complete a health questionnaire prior to the pre-admission visit. This allows health, social problems and discharge planning needs to be identified early, and appropriate referrals initiated.

Different Ways of Admission for Surgery

  • SDU = Same Day Unit

You are admitted to hospital, have the surgery and go home on the SAME DAY.

  • DOSA = Day Of Surgery Admission

You are admitted to the DOSA Unit on the day of your operation, and are transferred to a general ward after surgery to stay overnight.

  • Day before surgery

You are admitted to a general ward, one or two days prior to surgery.

  • Emergency Surgery

You become unwell unexpectedly and admitted directly to the hospital for surgery. You will have surgery as soon as there is an operating theatre time available. There may be a bit of a wait as each patient is prioritised according to the urgency of the surgery.
