The SMAHS Infectious Diseases Services provides inpatient and outpatient consulting services for the full range of infectious diseases, including HIV, sexually transmissible infections, viral hepatitis, infections in the immunocompromised, tropical and travel-related infections, and other serious community and hospital-acquired infections.

The Sexual Health Service provides outreach clinical services in Fremantle, Rockingham and Mandurah, as well as clinics at Fremantle Hospital.

The ID department maintains close liaison with the Department of Microbiology and shares with this department responsibility for devising and implementing best practice antimicrobial policies and protocols within Fremantle Hospital.

The department also directs the activities of the home intravenous antibiotic service within the Hospital in the Home programs based at Fremantle and Rockingham Hospitals.

A specialist clinical psychology service is provided within the department with a focus on adjustment and mood disorders related to Hepatitis C and HIV infection.

The Infectious Diseases Department aims to take a leadership role within the Southern Metropolitan Health Service, especially Fremantle Hospital, in promoting best practice infection management and antimicrobial prescribing.
