The Endoscopy Unit is responsible for a number of outpatient and inpatient based diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, enteroscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and bronchoscopy). The Gastroenterology service also provides ERCP (performed in the Radiology Department), performs liver biopsies (under ultrasound guidance) and inpatient consultative services. The Gastroenterology service provides numerous consultant-led general gastroenterology outpatient clinics with additional speciality clinics in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), Hepatology and Hepatitis C (in conjunction with the Infectious Diseases unit). Since 1996 the Gastroenterology service has run a Colorectal Cancer Screening Program, using Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, with approximately 600 patients attending the program each year. A centralised waitlist for endoscopic procedures in the South Metropolitan Region is in place to most efficiently coordinate the timely delivery of endoscopic services. Ambulatory endoscopy services are provided at Kaleeya Hospital, and also at Armadale and Rockingham in conjunction with the Armadale-Kelmscott and Rockingham Hospitals in order to improve the waiting time for diagnostic procedures. Clinical and basic Science research is a major part of the Gastroenterology department with work being undertaken in Iron and the liver, IBD, hepatitis C, endoscopic ultrasound and colonic carcinogenesis. | |||
