Multidisciplinary Pain Treatment & Management

The Unit is running 3 multidisciplinary programmes at present.

STEPS (Self-Training Educative Pain Sessions)

A clinical trial four module programme run over two days by the pain team (Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Pain Specialist, Rheumatologist) providing information and skills in a broad pain management plan designed to optimise treatment outcomes for patients with pain.

A medical referral is required. Some exclusion criteria.

PUMP (Pain Understanding and Management Programme)

An evidence-based intensive four week multidisciplinary pain management programme designed to improve patient’s physical function and coping capacity when dealing with ongoing pain.

A referral is required and patients are assessed for suitability.

Medical Pain Treatment

Pharmaceutical and surgical treatments for chronic pain conditions. Inpatient or day procedures include:

  • Injections: (facet joint, sleeve or disc)
  • Blocks: epidural, sympathetic, stellate ganglion,
  • Rhizotomy
  • Laminectomy

Clinical Psychology Outpatient Clinic

Doctors can refer patients for assistance with chronic health related problems or for assessment of suitability for surgical procedures.

For acceptance of referrals provide the following:

  • A referral detailing the nature of the problem and a relevant history indicating any previous treatments.
