Clinical Pathways

A clinical pathway is an evidence-based multidisciplinary tool that maps out the clinical care required for a particular diagnosis. It clearly defines the expected progress of a patient through the hospital system.

The aims of a clinical pathway are:

• to ensure that no critical aspects of care are forgotten and that all interventions are performed on time
• to ensure that the principles of evidence-based medicine guide the care provided for that patient type
• to be pro-active in planning care 
• to facilitate earlier discharge 
• to promote and maintain quality outcomes.
